Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty (born 25 December 1952) is the famed Indian Hindustani classical vocalist, composer, lyricist and has won millions of hearts with his melodious voice. Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty is considered a doyen of the Patiala-Kasur Gharana He also portrayed most subtle features of other major classical gharanas of India like Indor, Delhi, Jaipur, Gwalior, Agra, Kirana, Rampur and even Carnatic music of South India.
On his musical journey, he was guided by his father Shri Ajit Kumar Chakrabarty, who was his first Guru. Subsequently, he received training from Shri Pannalal Samanta, Late Kanaidas Bairagi and Dr. Amiyaranjan Banerjee. Later he went under the tutelage of Guru Jnan Prakash Ghosh, the maestro and a legendary figure by all means, and one of the all time great Gurus ever born. Also, Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, son of the legendary singer Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb.
He graduated top of his class in music, both in B.A and M.A from the prestigious Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata and joined the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in 1977.
He has honored with a plethora of awards and honors for his amazing work and contribution to the music field like National Award (1989), Kumar Gandharva Award (1993), Sangeet Natak Akademi award (2000), Padma Shri (2011), Banga Bibhushan (2012), Padma Bhushan Award, the third highest civilian award in India in 2020 and many more.
Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty has more than 100 albums to his credit, published from India, US, UK, Holland and Germany that feature pure classical and light classical numbers including thumris, dadras, bhajans and other types of devotional songs. He also has numerous recordings of Syamasangeet, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrulgeeti and Raagpradhan that are widely popular.
Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty had performed in some of the reputed venues across the world including Carnegie Hall, New Orleans Jazz Preservation Hall, USA, the Royal Albert Hall, Theatre de le Ville, France, and others.
He also rendered his vocal recitals at ‘Dover Lane’s stage for several times.
